Where is it.. 'That Gor..."

Where did it go?  You know what I mean, I  am talking about 'That Gor.."

I came to telnet chat.. to irc.. even eventually to Second Life, looking for 'That Gor'

What is it?  What do I define as 'That Gor' ?

Its very simple, its the Gor, from the books, roleplayed well, and as strict as possible, I did not come looking for drama, for one person to constantly question another about validity of roleplay, or if someone was doing something wrong.  By the way, you most likely are.

That said.

My Gor, my Gor is a place where if a slave is wearing a skirt, or any sort of clothing, it could be taken from her for any reason. Forget if she did something wrong, if her owner decided she should be stripped, she was stripped.

My Gor, is a place where a slave is welcome whipped the moment the collar graces her neck, she learns the value of obedience, and avoiding that whip.  She also learns that you have it in you to certainly DO that whipping.  To often I have seen someone say 'I cant do that, that's not me',  My first retort to them, then you shouldn't be IN Gor.. you wont keep a slave, you wont have the ability to role play anything near what Gor is supposed to be.

My Gor, is a place that makes you feel alive, your heart pounding.  This goes the same for MEN as well as WOMEN, for slaves as well, regardless of gender.

My Gor is a place where when you backhand a slave, or a free woman for displeasing you, you stop, and think, you wonder if those around you and question you, attack you, or applaud you.  This Gor seems to have gone.  One of them exists mainly, the one where they attack you.

My Gor is a place where you can truly act the Gorean man as YOU see him, and build your 'character' in a decently built Gorean environment, and expect 'tit for tat' in role play, without being meta gamed, or forced into illogical role play.  My Gor, is a place where people actually took time to read each others posts if it concerned them.

Admittedly, keeping up can be hard, but to have Gor fall so far behind the standards of what it SHOULD be?  I need to wonder...

My Gor, is a place where your heart races cause you made a mistake, and you could be collared, or killed for it, if someone caught you.  Where you take PERSONAL responsibility for your part in the roleplay REGARDLESS of how it might be interpreted by others.

My Gor, is harsh, unyeilding, unquestionably a black or white unfair barbaric environment, and in that I find the exquisite beauty that I would enjoy.

Some say that Gor is gone, never to return, I hear stories occasionally, and on the occasion I speak to someone, 'oh I know your type, yea, your type came through about 5 years ago.. 3 years ago.. 6 months ago.. they left however, for more fertile grounds.. a better place, somewhere they could be themselves..'

This is drek, this is impossible, this is the nature of insanity.  'That Gor' the Gor we are seeking, the roleplay, the world, the environment, this exact environment, INTELLIGENTLY role played, with a sense of abandonment of any earth issues, for even 30 minutes of your time, is vital to us, this is found, it is not lost, however its up to each, and every single one of us, to revive it.  Its not lost, its not mysteriously moved, it moves with us, it travels from one forum to another, WITH US, its spirit and meanings follow US, its us who let it down.

Its us who allow that feeling, that sense of adventure, that sense of wonder when we stand up, and make that singular post that might well define us, its us, that when the chips get tough, cause some complete and utter moron says 'but the books do not say anything about that' or worse yet 'this passage argues you cant do that', we abandon 'That Gor'.  That Gor which is the purview of the strong, of those who take what they wish, those who are rightly strong enough to own women, the vital lovely creatures that could inflame nations to war...

Where is that Gor?

Its in you.  Let it out, let it LIVE.

Are you a 'Retired Gorean' ?

Don't bother me, Im retired.

You do realize your doing the community a major disservice, right?

If you're truely retired, then you have no right to complain about how Gor used to be. You have no right to wax poetic for how things where, and how things will never be that way again.

Do you know why?

You just became part of the problem.

I've come across a few 'retired Goreans' in the last few years.

In fact, when I first came to Gor, back in 2000(ish) I heard stories about how the 'old Goreans' did things online, and how they have 'left' cause of how things are 'now'.

My first Gorean chat? A spod, talker, Moo, or whatever you wish to call it. I learned about how some of the old style Goreans used to keep the standards up, how things used to be, how things became so bad after they disappeared.

Fast forward, IRC.

Again more of the same, with how I wanted to explore the depths of Gor, I found that I would be regaled more, and more with old stories of the 'Old Gorean' and how I would have fit so well in with them. 'Where are they now' I'd ask. The answer I always got was pretty much the same 'left Gor' 'retired' 'just stopped showing up'. These people, these pioneers who came 'before' while some passed away, the vast majority just got tired of trying, I am sure, in mentoring the 'new gorean'. To be fair, that can be a hard task, that can be a job one can experience heavy burn out from, especially seeing todays community.

I did luck out, a couple of the 'old Goreans' where still around. This presented a challenge to me, as the way they acted, the way they presented themselves, was drastically different from what seemed 'common'. Even to the point of almost a bad taste in my own mouth. Was it me? or them? and which 'them' ?

Fast Forward, Second Life.

I feel like Im living a bad reboot of a tv sitcom. Almost worst then trying to relive my childhood cartoons, where things ever this bad? Really, where they?

I see, almost on a daily basis, people give up on Gor, new individuals, as well as old, the old Goreans are especially high on the burn out list. I know, cause I've felt it myself. However the more we leave 'Gor' to the vast masses that come flooding in, without trying to mentor, to guide, to assist those who are coming in to explore **OUR WORLD** as it was created by JOHN NORMAN, the more we are to blame.

Yes, thats right, every OLD GOREAN who leaves Gor to its own devices, in online ROLEPLAY community, is to blame for the state of how things are. EVERY OLD GOREAN who says they are retired, and are there only to be in contact with old friends, each one hurts the current roleplay community a little bit more.

Sure, some of the old Goreans will argue 'Im not roleplay, Im lifestyle'. It doesnt matter in my view, whether your roleplay, or lifestyle, you have something to contribute. Every lifestyle is a roleplay in some fashion, and being a lifestyle Gorean, while you can-not practice everything practical wise, you do bring a new fresh perspective to those who are new to the idea.

I challenge you. It doesnt matter if your character 'dies' or just gets 'tired'. I caution you. If your not partaking in 'Gor' but still 'hanging around' or 'moving on' to 'greener pastures' then your doing nothing to improve the situation with Gor, your doing more harm then good.

Stick around, mentor, guide, show the young whipper snaps WHY Gor is sooooo Great, show them WHAT makes it sooo Great.

Men, women, and .. Gorean roles.

If you have read one of the books, pretty much any of the books, you would think it would be pretty straight forward on the whole premise of the story, of the world itself, of the culture, and of what is expected of each person within their defendable circle of their sword, their spear, and yes their bow.

It first started years ago, I was a young Gorean, only a few days over 300 on Gor.. which is quite young when you think about it.

I was still young myself in Gor, in fact, it was within the first year or two of my experiencing this entire construct John Norman has set out for us... I was still getting used to some of the ideas, and adjusting on a couple levels to the atmosphere that should be.

We had a 'girl' come in, and eventually she came to us and explained, that she was a .. gee, I dont know how to say it. and I might have it wrong, so just 'flip' it if it is..

tiffany was actually a girl, who was in a boys body, waiting for gender reassessment surgery.

First of all, you have to know I have mixed feelings about this, and wouldnt get 'mixed up' in real life with someone like this, tho, I would let them live their lives like they have that right.

Now, that said..

 Gor, is a MANS WORLD.

GOR, is a world where WOMEN ARE NOT AFRAID TO BE WOMEN

Gor is a world where MEN REJOICE IN THEIR RIGHTS TO BE MEN

Gor is a world where even SLAVES rejoice in their sexuality and their slavehood.

Well.. presuming they are not working hard in the fields.. or working in the kitchen not getting their needs fulfilled.. but thats another story.

I have seen and heard of a number of things that bother me on ONLINE GOR.  Yes, I am including telnet/MOO chat, PRC, IMVU, Second Life, irc, and any other way we as GOREANS meet, roleplay.. communicate with each other.

This is one of the biggest issues I have.  We have manthers.  Men playing as panthers.  We have manjira's, men playing as kajira.  We have FemWarriors, we have Femasters, et al, et al.

Why do I have an issue with it?  After all, its roleplay, after all its a fictional constructed environment for our enjoyment, why not play what we want, as what we want.

I HAVE A PROBLEM WITH  YOUR TWISTING THE PHILOSOPHY OF GOR TO SUIT YOUR NEEDS OR WARPED DESIRES.

Gor, at its root, at the very source of John Norman's ideas for the world we play in, is a world where men are men, where men do not allow themselves to be weakened to be something other then they are.

Gor at its root, is a world where women, are women, they are not afraid to be women, even tho they might show disgust for slaves, as free women.  As slaves, they fear free woman, but they REJOICE in their gender, they REJOICE in what they are.  Women.

Gor at its root, is about getting around this stigma we on earth have had to suffer through.  I can't speak to whatever 'disease' or 'issue' that some claim puts them in the body of the wrong sex.  Thats not what this is about.

IF YOU ARE A MAN IN REAL LIFE, you should be playing a man in GOR.

IF YOU ARE A WOMAN IN REAL LIFE, you should be playing a woman in GOR.

If you want to gender bend, if you want to mix something up, go play vampland, go play some other fictional world where you might be much better received, where they expect 'wierd-ness'.

To make this matter worse.  While most of us are here to roleplay and not get involved on a Real life level, we have that barrier for a reason.  But keeping your true gender 'secret' becomes a serious issue.

You are a man playing a woman, didnt tell me, and you EXPECT me to trust you?

You are a woman, playing a man, didnt tell me, and you EXPECT me to trust you?

Not bloody likely, if you where a man playing a woman in real life, and I brought you home, I would be seriously pissed.  I would be seriously angry to the point  that  you risked any possible friendship or aquaintency we might have had possible.

Please, gender bending is something you should keep to your real life, or hell, bring it into SL, but keep it out of, and away from  your GOR character.  I expect you to, and I have a reasonable expectation of, the person behind the screen to be the gender your portraying on screen.

• I can get over the fact your 90 years old, pock marks, and liver spots.  
• I can get over the fact you might be 500 lbs, and in a wheelchair.
• I can get over the fact you might be a 60 year old woman without breasts, and with a beard
• I can even get over the fact you have man-boobs, are 76 years old and are a limp noodle Master.

BUT DAMNIT BE YOUR GENDER!

• I can get over the fact you have a bald head, or have blond hair, or have red hair
• I can get over the fact that you have challenges being a proper master
• I can get over the fact that you have challenges understanding the mindset of a freewoman or kajira.
• I can get over, the fact, that you are making up 90% of your character and  your not as othewise advertised.

I CAN NOT GET OVER YOU PLAYING THE OPPOSITE GENDER REGARDLESS WHAT YOU THINK YOU MAY OR MAY NOT HAVE BEEN BORN AS.

Over a year ago, in second life, I came across a woman avatar in second life.  She admitted to me that she was gender bending.  She was born RL a man, but was really a woman inside.  We had a LONG 6 hour conversation with 'him'.  While in my mind, I can't understand  how you can not be as you where born.  I can, and will, give the benefit of my years of knowledge when asked.  I can, and will, feel for your plight.  I can, and will even, sympathise with the fact you believe you think your a completely different gender.

I can not, and refuse to feel for you, if you are actively hiding such a thing from your role play partners.
